Welcome to e-Flora of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India

   Varanasi also known as Benares, Banaras or Kashi is a city on the banks of the river Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, India, 320 kilometers south-east of the state capital, Lucknow, and 121 kilometers east of Allahabad. Varanasi lies along National Highway 2 and is served by Varanasi Junction railway station and Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. Varanasi is located at an elevation of 80.71 meters (264.8 ft.) in the center of the Ganges valley of North India, in the Eastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh, along the left crescent-shaped bank of the Ganges, averaging between 15 meters (50 ft) and 21 meters (70 ft) above the river.  Located in the Indo-Gangetic Plains of North India, the land is very fertile because low-level floods in the Ganges continually replenish the soil. The total Geographical area of Varanasi is 1535 sq. Km. There are 0 Very Dense Forest, 1 Moderate Dense Forest and 16 Open Forest exist in Varanasi. The forest cover is 1.11% of the total geographical area. 

In our study, we found 92 plant families of Dicotyledons from Angiosperms. Click on the family names to get the details and identify your plant. We will soon provide key to the families.
